Peter Jackson has shown us much of New Zealand’s scenic wonderment. He’s interviewed about the benefits of filming in New Zealand many times. I shared the distinct pleasure of visiting many of Jackson’s filming locations, including Paradise Valley in Glenorchy, New Zealand. Paradise Valley includes Diamond Lake, pointed mountains and rolling fields.

Maramures, Romania

Romania is small enough where it is hard to choose one location over the other. Still, Maramures is a northern region of Romania that borders Ukraine. Half of the area is mountainous, including the Rodna Mountains, with great portions filled with untouched wilderness. Even the cities in Romania look picturesque.

Isle of Skye, Scotland

Isle of Skye, Scotland
Isle of Skye, Scotland

An island with a mountainous center gives way to rocky slopes which meet the crashing sea: an elemental combination that can’t help but inspire. The landscape is as cacophanous as bagpipes to the untrained ear. Large sharply-shaped boulders dot the green grass of the island at random. The Isle of Skye is a popular location to film, including Macbeth (2015) starring Michael Fassbender.

Karelia, Finland/Russia

Karelia, Finland / Russia
Karelia, Finland / Russia

A shared province between Finland and Russia, Karelia’s beauty can be found along the rocky shores of its large lakes, the many rivers that cut into the landscape, and lush, unspoiled forests. Cottages dot the countryside where the inhabitants trade the scenery of the day for the dancing northern lights at night.
The more I see of Russia, it becomes more clear as to why Russia has such a rich history in the Folklore/Fantasy tradition.
